Description/Job Summary

Under direct supervision by a licensed dentist, perform general chairside and clinical functions related to patient dental care, as permitted by the Maryland COMAR regulation.


Instruct dental students on the principles of exposing quality intraoral and panoramic images. 
Implement infection control protocols. 
Ensure radiation safety principles. 
Retracts oral tissues including lips, cheeks, tongue, and flaps 
Performs intra-oral photography.  Exposes and process dental radiographs. 
Exposing intraoral and panoramic imaging. 
Exposure and quality assurance related to panoramic imaging. 
Taking impressions for mouth guards or diagnostic casts. 
Orders, receives, and maintains inventory of clinical supplies and equipment.  
Cleans and maintains clinic equipment. 
Cleans up disposable supplies after a procedure. 
Performs infection control procedures. 
Set-up disposable barriers; uses proper handling techniques for sharps. 
Applying topical anesthesia.

Required Skills

Ability to communicate well with a multiplicity of people including students, patients, staff, and faculty in a highly diverse dental setting.
Effective knowledge of intraoral digital radiography.
Knowledge of scanning and duplication. 
Expertise in exposing intraoral and panoramic imaging.
High level proficiency of intraoral Radiographic anatomy.
Ability to self-assess the quality of radiographic images for continuing improvement.

Required Experience

Employees in this job class must be a dental assistant, CPR certified and is obligated to meet and maintain Maryland State requirements for dental radiography.

Required Education

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); three years’ dental assisting experience.  Related education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Required Qualifications

To be considered for this position all candidates must possess the Maryland State Radiology license and must have an active CPR certification.  Candidates that do not meet these requirements will not be considered.
