Description/Job Summary

Candidates shall, at a minimum, hold a current certification from the Maryland State Board of Dentistry to practice dental radiation technology.
If selected employees will also undergo an extensive on the job orientation and training program for operation of Dental CBCT machines.
Under general supervision by the Director of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology (OMFR) and the Manager of the Oral Radiology Clinic duties include but not limited to:
exposing dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) radiographic examinations
expose additional extraoral and intraoral dental radiographic examinations as needed
shall assist with training exercises and other educational activities for dental hygiene students, pre-doctoral dental students, and ASE residents on a rotating schedule with other Oral Radiology Clinic personnel.
In addition, will assist with other clinical and administrative operations of the Division of Oral Radiology, as permitted by the State of Maryland COMAR regulations.


  1. Receive departmental requests for radiographic consultations (RADCON Forms) and respond appropriately. This includes accurately treatment planning the proper CBCT examination in the patient’s Axium electronic health record.
  2. Schedule patients for the requested radiographic examinations on a timely basis; for example, dental CBCT examinations are frequently requested to be exposed the same day as the request.
  3. In a timely manner, forward RADCON Forms to the appropriate Radiologist for review of the radiographs, interpretation and posting of the report.
  4. Properly organize and ensure that appropriate CBCT volumes and radiology reports have been disseminated to the ordering clinician.
  5. With the assistance of the Director of OMFR, develop and monitor the dental CBCT quality assurance program, including tracking of retakes.
  6. Complete appropriate educational activities related to computed tomography, including dental CBCT.
  7. Maintain competence in the operation of the departmental radiographic machines, including the dental CBCT machines.
  8. Be prepared to respond to patient questions regarding radiographic examinations, including the dental CBCT.

Required Skills

Thorough knowledge of the principles of dental radiology theory, technique, and practice.
Additional training in computed tomography, with an emphasis on dental CBCT theory, techniques and radiation safety.
Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

Must be CPR certified within the first twelve months of employment.
Employees in this job class must also meet and maintain Maryland State and National Certification requirements for dental radiography

Required Experience

Two years of experience as a Dental Radiation Technologist is required; related education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Required Education

The Maryland State Board of Dentistry requires Dental Radiation Technologists to be 18 years of age or older; to be of good moral character; to hold a high school degree, or equivalent; to satisfactorily complete a Board-approved training program; and, to pass the Dental Radiation Technologist examination.


Employees in this job class may be required to receive immunization shots to prevent illness due to exposure to blood borne pathogens.
Overtime, weekend, on-call and shift work may be required.
