Description/Job Summary

Under general supervision by a licensed dentist, the Dental Assistant Specialist is responsible for facilitating patient triage and providing clinical support to the patients of the clinic; while using expertise to perform dental assisting duties, supporting dental faculty, providers, and students. The Dental Assistant Specialist will primarily carry out dental assistant duties in addition to facilitating patient flow and assist in supporting full components of the front-end duties as needed. As permitted by the Maryland COMAR regulation. Supports the Mission of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and Universities of Maryland Shady Grove. Must comply with the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s Code of Conduct.

Responsibilities/Duties

Maintain patient care areas

Assists Dental provider and UMD dental students with all patient care activities

Obtain patient history

Assists Faculty Dentists, Residents, and UMD dental students with acute dental procedures 

Accurately records and sends permissible electronic prescriptions through the Electronic Dental Record, as directed by the rendering Dental provider.

Accurately documents patient procedures before the patients visit is complete

Facilitate and Capture Digital X-Rays

Ensure the proper equipment is connected daily before start of shift and at the end of the day.

Order supplies

Responds to patient inquiries regarding treatment

Required Skills

Previous dental and or medical receptionist experience required, including experience with insurance and electronic claims submission;

Ability to understand dental and medical terminology;

Must have positive and effective interpersonal communication skills; while handling telephone communications with both patient and employee contact;

Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks;

Ability to work professionally with a diverse population base;

Ability to communicate information and ideas inspeaking so others will understand;

Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Proficiency and accuracy inthe use of software programs such as: An Electronic Dental Record, Excel, Word,and Outlook.

Preferred Skills

Bilingual Spanish speaking

Required Experience

Five years of chair side dental assisting in academic setting, community, or private setting; preferably in a high volume, fast paced environment. Related education may be substituted on a year for year basis. 
                   

Required Education

Candidate must have completed a dental assisting program from an accredited institution and have a current radiology certification from the state of Maryland. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); 
                   

Required Qualifications

High School dipolma or GED. Graduate from an accredited Dental Assisting training program, current Maryland State Radiology license, and current CPR certification

Employees in this job class must be CPR certified and are obligated to meet and maintain Maryland State Radiology License and National Certification requirements for dental assisting and dental radiography;

Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Risk Category A –WILL have exposure to blood orbody fluids.

Monday – Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM, or as determined by operational needs. Some weekends and evening hours may be required. Overtime may occur.
