Description/Job Summary

Must have one of the certifications or licenses listed below, no exceptions:

  • Maryland General Dental Assisting Expanded Functions (MDG)
  • Maryland Orthodontic Expanded Functions (MOD)
  • Certified Dental Assistant (CDA)
  • Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA)

In addition you are required to be certified as a Dental Radiation Technologist and have a CPR certification.

 

Under general supervision by a licensed dentist, perform general chairside and clinical functions related to patient dental care, as permitted by the Maryland COMAR regulation.  Assists dentist in most procedures; anticipates needs for instruments, aspiration, special tools and supplies.

Additionally, the incumbent will coordinate student attendance, and student assignments to patients. Works with other first floor clinics to facilitate distribution of students and resources.  Demonstrates proper intraoral and panoramic technique to students. Assist the students with difficult patients. Evaluate students’ technical competence.  Run radiographic quality assurance program.  Participate in laboratory classes associated with 1st and 2nd year Radiology classes. May participate in didactic teaching of radiographic technique.

 

Responsibilities/Duties

1. Places and removes rubber dams, matrix bands, and/or retraction cords.

2. Applies topical anesthesia, fluoride, and desensitizing agents as instructed by a dentist.

3. Removes excess cement.

4. Prepares impressions for study models.

5. Prepares, places, and removes temporary crowns.

6. Constructs athletic mouth guards and customized trays.

7. Performs vitality tests.

8. Prepares and fits stainless steel crowns.

9. Removes sutures.

10. Removes and places subsequent periodontal dressing.

11. Dries root canals.

12. Etches teeth.

13. Performs all of the duties of a Dental Assistant, Non-Certified.

Required Skills

Thorough knowledge of the principles of dental assisting theory, technique, and practice. Skill in procedures using sit-down four-handed dentistry techniques. Skill in the use of dental instruments and equipment. Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Required Experience

Two years’ prior experience as a Dental Assistant. 

Required Education

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

  • Maryland Orthodontic Expanded Functions (MOD)
  • Certified Dental Assistant (CDA)
  • Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA)

In addition you are required to be certified as a Dental Radiation Technologist and have a CPR certification.

Required Qualifications

Employees in this job class must be CPR certified before working on the clinic floor. Employees in this job class must also meet and maintain Maryland State and National Certification requirements for dental assisting and dental radiography. The Certified Dental Assistant as certified by the Dental Assisting National Board is required for this position.

Details

The rate of pay associated with this position is dependent on experience.

This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt position scheduled to work 40 hours per week with some fluctuations in your assigned schedule.
