Description/Job Summary

Under general supervision of the department manager, oversees the day to day activities of processing (decontaminating and sterilizing) and inventory of hand pieces that are required to support patient care in the dental clinics as well as the educational experience of student in the clinics.  Oversees that equipment is properly sterilized meeting OSHA, DCDC, and ASA requirements.  In addition, responsible for the smooth operation of the central sterilization department in the absence of the Central Sterilization Supervisor.


  1. Daily oversight of processing/sterilization of hand pieces, piezos, burs, etc.

  1. Inspects and identifies malfunctioning handpieces to determine needed repairs.

  1. Performs simple basic repairs and ensures operational readiness of electric handpiece equipment for use in dental clinics.

  1. Provides weekly preventive maintenance to handpieces.

  1. Maintains an inventory of maintenance supplies and parts needed to service and maintain equipment.

  1. Interacts with the Dental School’s equipment service technicians as needed.

  1. Oversees handpiece inventory management in conjunction with CMS Manager via computerized barcoding/data matrix system.

  1. Acts as the group leader/supervisor in CS in the event of the absence of the evening shift CS supervisor.

  1. Special projects as assigned by the CMS Manager.

  1. Communicates and makes recommendations for operational improvements in CS.

  1. Attends monthly CMS Director’s staff meetings.

  1. Other duties as needed and assigned.

Required Skills

Thorough knowledge of central sterilization process, universal precautions regarding the handling of infectious waste. Communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to train, supervise, and evaluate personnel. Ability to perform extensive standing and walking. Ability to push and pull carts of supplies to make deliveries around building. Ability to lift, stock shelves, and load carts of supplies and equipment. Skill in operating equipment such as sonic washers, sterilizers, autoclaves, heat sealers, and sharpening wheels. Ability to use computers and other standard office equipment. Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment

Required Experience

3 - 5 years of experience in central sterilization or materials management in a dental or other health care environment operational area.

Preferred Experience

Prior experience or training in supervision strongly preferred.

Required Education

High School or GED


Evening Shift 2:00 – 11:00 P.M.

 Starting salary is $15.50 an hour
